Taking it back to the old school with Full Effect : Perth Throwback DJ s

Here at Full Effect DJs HQ, our Perth Throwback DJ s are dusting off their vinyls and taking a stroll down memory lane to look at the song of the year for every year, from 1971. The song of the year is determined by length of time spent at the number one spot on the charts (i.e commercial success), and is divided into a few categories, but today we’re just looking at Pop and R n B entries. This is a pretty comprehensive history of the most iconic pop music of the last few decades, and it’s a really good place to start if you’re stuck for ideas about the kind of music you want to hear at your wedding, 21st, Christmas Party or other special event.

Aside from playing great track like these, over the years we’ve developed a bit of a formula for the type of stuff we play on a typical night (although this is of course highly customisable depending on your tastes!)

What memories do these tracks bring back for you? Let us know in the comments!

Walk Like an Egyptian

The Bangles

It’s hard not to like a track that comes with such a strong dance directive. Fun fact: producer Liam Sternberg wrote the song after seeing people on a ferry walking awkwardly to keep their balance.

Faith

George Michael

One of the first songs he came out with after disbanding Wham, Faith is surely George Michael’s most well loved musical legacy. With an addictively bouncy jangly guitar backed up by finger clicking, hand-claps, tambourine and hi-hat, the groove is well established before Michael even starts to sing. George Michael was one of the many musical legends we lost last year, tragically leaving us on Christmas day.

I Will Always Love You

Whitney Houston

Houston, we don’t have a problem – this here is the ballad to end all ballads and reinforced Whitney’s status as a vocal powerhouse. While she had a string of hits which often make their way into our Perth Throwback DJ ‘s sets, ‘I Will Always Love You’ is the soaring bittersweet mountain of joy that we’ll always remember. While Whitney sadly passed away in 2012, tracks like these ensure her musical legacy is infinite.

Love Yourself

Justin Bieber

The run away hit of last year from Bieber’s Purpose album was surprisingly insightful in comparison to his previous work, and some said represented a return to form. Others said “What form?” and struggled to take 23 year old Bieber seriously in light of his constant off-stage antics.  Whether you love him or hate him, you’ve got to admit the chorus to Love Yourself is pretty darn catchy, and the message is one that’s hearing.
